Sannyasa Reports 2005

Sannyasa Reports for the years 2005-2006

Bhakti Caitanya Swami

2005 was a very busy year for me. After the GBC meetings in Mayapur I

returned to South Africa and preached there till the end of April. We had a

wonderful Rathayatra in Durban, plus many other preaching events, like a

nice tent campaign in a town near Durban.

At the beginning of May I went to Russia and traveled in Siberia. Then in

the middle of June I went to the Baltic states, Lithuania, Lativa and

Estonia. I did preaching programmes every day in those places, including a

wonderful Padayatra festival for a week in Lithuania.

I continued preaching in East Europe until early July, when I returned to

South Africa for a second Rathayatra in Durban, and then shortly afterwards

I returned to Lithunia and Russia for regional festivals in two places.

Then I returned to South Africa for Janmastami and an amazing Radhastami

festival. We took the little Radha Krishna Deities from the altar in the Sri

Sri Radha Radhanatha temple and took them for a boat ride in the newly

repaired temple moat. It was magnificent.

Then I returned to Russia for the Anapa festival, and went back to South

Africa for the festival for the 30th anniversary of Srila Prabhupada's visit

to the country. It coincided with the 20th anniversary of the opening of the

Radha Radhanatha temple in Durban, and we had wonderful programmes in

different places.

Then at the end of October I went to Sri Vrindavana Dhama and filmed

Nandagram for a DVD which I will be publishing soon.

I returned via Mauritius and spent a week preaching there, doing a seminar

on "Lessons from the Pastimes of Lord Caitanya". This was attended daily by

250 devotees, and was a wonderful success.

Then I returned to South Africa for the marathon. Finally over the new year

weekend (December 30-January 1) we opened a new temple in Phoenix on the

northern side of Durban. In this way 2005 came to a close for me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bhakti Charu Swami

Last year I was mostly involved in building a temple in Ujjain in the

central part of India. This is the place where Krsna and Balaram came to

study in Sandipani Muni's ashram. This is also one of the four places in

Inida where "Kumbha Mela" takes place.

Since I was extremely busy with this project I could not travel much last

year. I made only two short trips to the States and Europe and one to South

Africa.

I started the construction of the temple in Ujjain in April last year. By

Krishna's mercy the temple in Ujjain is almost complete and the inauguration

will be on 10th February, on the day of Sri Nityananda Trayodasi.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bhakti Dhira Damodara Swami

In 2005 I was able to complete the temple building which has been lingering for years. I also established the Bhagavatam class, which is held every Saturday in members’ houses, and Bhagavad-gita class, which is held on Fridays. In the future I hope to expand these classes to all the areas in our zone.

In 2006 we will start a charity home, where underprivileged citizens and devotees' children will be trained in material and spiritual knowledge. Some well-to-do Indian devotees have requested us to open a charity home, and they will give us the facilities. We will train poor people who cannot afford an education.

Preaching gives satisfaction.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bhakti Purusottama Swami

In 2005 I mainly focused on preaching in my zones in India. I visited the USA once for about a week to attend an SMPDC meeting. I visited the UK, Holland, and the Czech Republic, each for a few days. During February and September I visited South Korea. Now I am concentrating more on preaching in Bangladesh.

In 2006 I plan to spend some time writing books if Krishna wants. I am interested in preaching more to youths.

Bhakti Sharan Shanta Gosvami

I am responsible for supervising the Namahatta Preaching Centers in ________. This center consists of two brahmacaris, two grihasthas, one mataji traveling sankirtan party, and two brahmacari preachers. Six devotees from the Ukraine and Belarus also help in book distribution, especially during Srila Prabhupada’s sankirtan marathon.

Namahatta Preaching Center activities

I regularly visit nama-hattas in eight main cities of Lithuania. Besides, I visited temples and nama-hattas in Riga (Latvia), Tallinn, Sillamae, and Tartu (Estonia).

In 2005 our Nama-hatta Preaching Center brahmacaris preached in Latvia. There they started three nama-hattas in Riga, two in Daugpilis, and 22 sitting harinams in Riga. Also, they distributed books in Riga and tried to distribute books in Tallinn.

We bought more then 35 thousand books from the Kaunas and Vilnius temples:

The amount of distributed books this year is three times bigger then in the previous year.

Here are the activities of the two brahmacari preachers who do not belong to the traveling sankirtan party:

10 programs in schools, universities, cultural centers; 5 lectures in Vilnius Pedagogical University; 23 lectures in Vedic Cultural Center; Establishment of Sunday School (gurukula) for congregational devotee children; counseling new people who start practicing Krishna consciousness after the lectures and seminars; 15 preaching programs in Nama-hattas; preaching through the internet.

The Nama-hatta Preaching Center supervises two public institutions called the Public Institution Namahatta and the Charity and Sponsorship Fund Vaishnava Monastery.

Activities of the Public Institution Namahatta, in cooperation with the Nama-hatta Preaching Center:

Harinams in 25 major cities of Lithuania. 19 cultural programs in children’s homes, schools, universities, yoga clubs, etc. 2 of these programs were broadcast on local television.

Charity and Sponsorship Fund Vaishnava Monastery

The major leader of this project is Bhakti Chaitanya Swami. This institution was officially registered. Construction project of the monastery was officially confirmed. Also, permission for construction of this monastery (24 rooms, 700 m2) was received.

Sponsorship

Nine devotees businessmen and public institutions are sponsoring us. They donated US$11,600 for the book distribution program (to cut down the BBT price by 20-40%). Also, they donated two cars for traveling sankirtan parties and $11,300 for building the monastery. Besides, they helped with building materials and architectural engineering. We will try to get more sponsorship during the winter. In spring we plan to brick in the shell of the building with decorative bricks and start to build the third floor. The foundation was laid.

Main prospects

We consider book distribution the basic form of our preaching. All the other programs are developing automatically. Our preaching and cultural programs will be more oriented toward youth in schools and universities. We will try to develop preaching through the Internet and television.

A. Preaching and Projects during the Year 2005

B. Plans for Up-Coming Year 2006

C. Perceptions and Realizations

D. Conclusion

A. PREACHING AND PROJECTS DURING THE YEAR 2005

I wrote my last Annual Sannyasa Report from Dallas on January 26th, 2005. Since leaving Dallas, I visited the temples in Seattle and Vancouver before leaving Canada in the middle of February, 2005. I stopped over in Tokyo for a few days and then proceeded to Malaysia for a week or so, holding programs in Kuala Lumpur,  Kulim, Ipoh, Penang, and a few other places. In early March I visited Nepal to meet some of my disciples I had not met for a number of years. After spending two weeks in Katmandu, I returned to Malaysia. By late March I traveled to Indonesia and attended the Gaura Purnima Festival there, after which I traveled to different islands to oversee some of our projects. Things seem to be progressing well in Indonesia. I again returned to Penang in the third week of May and have more or less stayed in Malaysia since that time, except for a one-month visit to Indonesia, again, in the month of August to attend Janmastami celebrations in Puncak and travel to Bali and other centers. In July of 2005 I was formally accepted as a candidate for a Ph.D. program in education at the local university here in Penang. I am staying in a newly-started preaching center, the Bhaktivedanta Student Center, where some of the local devotees serve prasadam on campus twice a month to a few hundred students, hold a regular Thursday and Friday evening yoga class for  some 60 Japanese students, and also host a weekly Saturday evening program for the general devotees.

In September of 2005, some of my disciples from a few countries joined together to acquire a piece of land in South India and started a varnasrama project, which they have named Sahyadri Sri Krishna Balarama Ksetra. They have registered the project under a separate Trust called the Global Varnasrama Educational Social and Cultural Organization (GLOVESCO) which will be working very closely with ISKCON.

The aim of the project is to promote varnasrama ideals and to become an educational and training center for those who have a particular interest in varnasrama-dharma development. The Trustees of GLOVESCO will soon be printing a brochure about the project to inform all concerned. Since South India is already famous for its various medical services and natural health treatments, our devotees have set up a Sahyadri Yoga Institute and Nature Cure Center as part of the project, which is located some 30 KM from Manipal and Udupi. Qualified devotee yoga teachers are presently staying there and have begun to offer Yoga Therapy and other forms of nature-cure treatment (our first "patient" is actually His Holiness Radha Raman Maharaja, who is there at the time of writing this report and he can tell you all about both the place and the treatment). Since the project is new, I am giving here the website from which more information can be had once the site is more developed: www.sahyadriksetra.org

I also will continue to help promote varnasrama preaching through my main website, www.varnasrama.org, which is soon to take on a new, improved look.

B. Plans for up-coming year

I will be based in Penang for the next couple of years, or up until the time my present studies come to an end. Later this month, and possibly during the coming year as well, I plan to give some seminars on applied varnasrama. Beginning next month, I should start traveling as part of my study fieldwork, during which time I expect to again visit Indonesia and possibly a few other countries. These studies will be my main focus this year, as well as continuing to keep contact with my disciples, mainly via e-mail.

C. Perceptions and Realization

Well, this year I am turning 60, and that in itself, brings its own realizations; something, I am sure, more and more of us are experiencing (or already have experienced). Srila Prabhupada nicely explains in his purports to the Srimad-Bhagavatam: "For an intelligent person, the appearance of old age is an impetus to spiritual life." (SB 4.27.27) And again: "A devotee's old age or disease in the present life is but an impetus to such guaranteed eternal life." (SB 2.3.17)

I am happy in my sannyasa asrama. I keep a regular sadhana and remain optimistic about the future of Krishna consciousness, both my own personally and that of our ISKCON society.

I must confess that I continue to sense a lack of involvement, support, and general understanding in the area of varnasrama-dharma development. I believe our leaders need to give this more attention. To the extent that we can realize the importance of village life (and all of what that implies) on this planet, to that extent we will begin to understand the necessity of varnasrama. As strange as it may sound, it is becoming increasingly clear in my mind that living an agrarian lifestyle is the social norm that the vast majority of people (including our devotees not actively involved in city preaching) should adopt; indeed, it is one which should have never been abandoned.

In addition to varnasrama, and more so in relation to it, I would also like to see more attention given to assisting preaching activities in two important countries, China and Japan. I have heard that Srila Prabhupada said that although the Chinese will be the last ones to come, they will make the best devotees. I would like to see us make that happen in the near future.

D. Conclusion

I pray for the continued mercy of the Vaisnavas so that I may carry on with whatever little service I am able to render.  I take this opportunity to ask forgiveness for any offenses I have committed against those who may read this report. Every year we are losing more and more servants, who are being called back by the law of destiny. My only wish is that Lord Krishna allow me to remain as actively involved in preaching as I can till the very end, whenever that may be.

I wish to thank all of you who are serving Srila Prabhupada's mission so valiantly. Without the presence of our sannyasis and other active preachers, this material world would indeed be a piteous and sorrowful place.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bhakti Vikasa Swami

As in most years, I spent most of 2005 in India and also visited the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, some countries in Europe, and the US. I spent considerable time writing, including hundreds of e-mails. For the first time I spent all of Karttika in Mayapur, doing some extra seva and sadhana.

Many devotees ask about my upcoming book on Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura. Research is almost finished. I am now going over the manuscript, giving it a detailed look-over, whenever I get time, which I try to make whenever I can. After that come final editing, proofreading, and layout, followed by indexing, which will take at least two months more. It seems as if it should be printed in 2006.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bhaktisiddhanta Swami

In 2005 I focused my service in Sri Dhama Mayapur as a resident sannyasi with visits to Kolkata, Sila Guri, Nepal, and Bangladesh. I have, apart from temple programs, been spending time with student and congregational preaching in Kolkata and Nepal. In Mayapur one of my unofficial services has been to unite Eastern and Western locals, to bring the devotees closer together as we try to build a city. The Mayapur Festival, Navadvipa Mandal Parikrama, and Ganga Safari (last year in Northern India), started the new year, and after the above-mentioned travels the year concluded with some time in Vrindaban during Kartika.

I now spend three months on visits to the West. I go to Australia twice yearly and the US for the LA Ratha-yatra. Nowadays my street book distribution is mostly in Melbourne and Perth.

The last three years I have been based in India, which is a complete contrast to my earlier Western preaching arena in New Zealand and Australia. I do feel that I am now in a better position to imbibe the Vaisnava culture, especially by spending time in the dhamas.

2006 will be a repeat of the above. I look forward to the unlimited opportunities of going deeper into my service and attempting to become more instrumental in inspiring others.

In 2005 I visited China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and some countries in the Middle East. In Bangkok we had a successful third Ratha-yatra, with about a thousand people taking part. I also participated in a Janmastami program in Taipei that got good press coverage. I spent three months touring China and visited nearly every place where we have devotees. I taught a seminar at Mayapur before Gaura Purnima and also taught Sri Isopanisad as part of a Bhakti-sastri course, as well as part of the First Canto in a Bhakti-vaibhava course. I also distributed books in Bangkok.

My plan for 2006 is similar to 2005.

Candrasekhara Swami

2005: This year I spent almost completely within the New York City Area. To conserve money and time, I have stationed myself here. Romapada Swami is still working with many other members of the GBC on the project to liberate the Long Island temple from the Ritviks. This has now mostly become a legal project; I cannot legally reside there. We are trying to keep the home fires burning and at least a small congregation waiting in the wings until we can once again regain control. The difficulty is that Long Island is far from Brooklyn. Mostly my Long Island projects are limited to twice monthly Bhakta-Vrksa Meetings and twice monthly Sunday Programs at Lilananda’s home in Mineola. We had out first program at Stony Brook University two weeks ago, and this looks promising for 2006. A young Indian student from Singapore managed to start an on-campus club. He is a disciple of Bhakti-Svarupa-Damodara Swami.

I have been giving the Bhagavatam class almost every morning here in the Radha-Govinda Mandir, except when some ISKCON traveling preacher is here. Usually I also give the Wednesday night Bhagavad-gita class. I speak on Sundays at either Brooklyn, Lilananda’s in Mineola, or Sunanda’s in Richmond Hill. Throughout 2005 I also did many programs on Saturdays in New Jersey, Staten Island, Queens, and New Rochelle.

My weekdays were spent doing book distribution in Richmond Hill, Queens, and sometimes Manhattan. I like New York because there are many preaching opportunities. Between book distribution and weekend programs, I am slowly dissolving my car debt.

I left NYC only three times the whole year (not counting trips to New Jersey). I attended the New Vrindavan Festival of Inspiration, the Toronto Ratha-yatra, and a commemoration for Bhakti-tirtha Swami in Detroit.

2006: I will likely remain in NYC for at least another year, after which my car debt should be small enough to make travel practical. By an odd twist of fate, I bought the car so that I could travel within the US for preaching, and now it is the very reason I am not traveling. But hopefully that will soon end. My aspiration was to basically help with the preaching in the US, and a vehicle is essential for that. I still consider myself based in New Vrindavan, and once I reach a reasonable point in the debt balance, I will spend much more time there again. The general plan for Long Island is that if and when we regain management of that location, I will help with the transition back to ISKCON. My prayers are for a swift resolution, but we will see how Krsna unfolds things.

In 2006 I plan to again attend both the New Vrindavan Festival of Inspiration and the Toronto Ratha-yatra, and 2006 will probably be a repeat of last year in terms of weekend programs and book distribution.

Dhanvantari Swami

For several years I have not been sending my annual report. Forgive me for this negligence.

I am headquartered in Campina Grande, an academic city, in the countryside of the state of Paraíba in Brazil's Northeast.

In addition to traveling and preaching, I’ve been developing an education project for adult people based on the Bhakti Sastri syllabus. The organization is in the style of brahmacaris and brahmacarinis ashrama and the students stay for a year in an exclusive dedication period. After that, they submit to the international exam of Board Of Examinations and return to their original yatras. Some of them resume their studies, others engage in preaching projects. We have already graduated more than 60 students within five years.

In this same city where I am headquartered, I lead the organization of an urban condominium of devotees and the construction of a temple for future Radha Krishna installation.

I have been developing a preaching addressed to the University public – students and teachers – and in the first semester of 2005 I formally taught the subject matter Hinduism, in a Science of Religion course at a post-graduation level at the Federal University of Paraíba.

The main activity in this city this year was the hosting of Drutakarma Prabhu in his academic preaching, which fitted perfectly well in the project that we have already been developing.

I traveled to several cities such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Fortaleza, Porto Alegre, Florianópolis, Curitiba and Salvador presenting courses and seminars, in addition to traditional lectures of Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam.

To complete my activities in 2005 I took an excursion with the graduating students of the Seminary to various cities of our country like Recife, where we attended Hridayananda Goswami´s preaching, Rio de Janeiro, where we took part in Ratha Yatra, Vraja Bhumi Community and New Gokula Community, where we concluded the school year by presenting seminars and round table discussions about Bhakti Sastri themes.

Then, I returned to Rio de Janeiro, where I joined the Gurukula Iskcon Rio research group.

Next year, besides continuing the Education projects and academic preaching, I intend to take an excursion to India and to spend Kartika's Month in Vrindavana.

Guru Prasad Swami

2005

From the beginning to 2005 until June I did some routine traveling to my zone, mostly for emergency issues, since my eye problem was still acute. Now it is better, though not completely cured, and it has not improved much in the last six months. I am trying some alternative treatments as I discover them.

I attended the Mexico City Ratha-yatra in May, the Trinidad Ratha-yatra in August, the Tijuana Ratha-yatra in September, and the Guadalajara Ratha-yatra in November.

I have a small asrama in South Texas where I am trying to spend a little more time between tours to increase study and try to stabilize my nervous system, which doctors tell me is not in such good shape. I will continue to do so this year, as well as trying to write some.

I am trying to do some preaching out of our little asrama in Texas, but nothing significant has developed yet.

I visited Mexico briefly two times in mid-year, and for almost one month in Oct-Nov. I visited El Salvador only once this year, for five days, Costa Rica thrice, combining some official legal matters with preaching. I visited Arizona only twice this year, Colombia only once, Venezuela twice, and Trinidad three times. I am on my way to St. Lucia, where we will dedicate the house of one nice devotee, and he will try to receive nice persons there in the future for cultivation. We are doing some preaching in Martinique, but I will not visit till next year, although some of the devotees will come to visit me in St. Lucia.

That is about it. My principal realization is the same; that sannyasis should gradually, or immediately, if possible, retire from management and preach and be sadhus, increasing the faith of the devotees and adding a visible icon of purity, which is badly needed in many parts of ISKCON.

2006

I hope to start writing some articles for my own purification.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hridayananda das Goswami

2005

The first part of the year I was in San Luis Obispo, CA, developing our preaching center there. It is now going on without my constant presence. Later in the year I went to Atlanta three times, Brazil for three weeks, and also Tennessee twice for about a total of two weeks. I am also going to Mexico at the end of the year. I've been working on my writing and counseling devotees all over the world and also advising various ISKCON projects.

2006

In the coming year I will do more of the same.

Jayadvaita Swami

"What have you accomplished in 2005?"

Not much. An increment over last year: more teaching at the MIHE.

"What so you hope to accomplish in the future?"

A little more.

Looking to hand over many duties to younger men.

Kesava Bharati Dasa Goswami

2005 was more of the same for me.

I spent 5 months in Govardhana in 2005, six months in the United States, between Dallas, Houston, and the West Coast (mainly with Vaisesika Prabhu, helping him develop plans for reviving book distribution in North America and his San Jose temple, ISKCON Silicon Valley). I also briefly visited Sacramento, where my son has settled down and a devotee named Nityananda Ram lives, and Southern California, mainly with Giriraja Swami, where I attended the LA Ratha-yatra.

My main services have been editing for Sivarama Maharaja and Gopiparanadhana Prabhu, although this year working on Sivarama Maharaja's new book has dominated my time more than in previous years. I have been able to keep up the editing while traveling and preaching.

Maharaja's new book is ambitious. It will be a comprehensive overview of the process of devotional service, from the very beginnings of the awakening of mixed faith all the way to meeting Krsna face to face. It's an attempt to bring together all the threads in Srila Prabhupada's books and the books and commentaries of our previous acaryas into one train of thought and to ISKCONize it in the sense that the points made are with examples of how they apply to the ISKCON way of life and basic programs Srila Prabhupada gave us. I think it will be timely, or maybe even overdue. I've been working on this book almost constantly since March 2005.

I have two more major books on my plate: the Tattva-sandarbha, with commentary by Gopiparanadhana Prabhu, and the next book from Sivarama Maharaja, Tavakathamrtam, the introduction of which turned out to be the book I mentioned in the above paragraph. That book, Suddha-bhakti-cintamani, will serve as an introduction to the whole Krsna in Vrndavana Series.

I still maintain my advisory capacity to the Special Projects Division of the BBT and participated in the meetings in Vrndavana during Kartika as usual. I also organized the conference to get the devotees and the threads together for the BBT Bhakti-ratnakara project, translated by Sarvabhavana Prabhu and edited by Kaisori Dasi.

I've been asked to read the Brhad-bhagavatamrta for an audio book being produced by the NEBBT. I've just started and will do it this year in Dallas, where a couple of devotees have built a small but professionally equipped recording studio. That will probably mean more time in Dallas, which, by the way, is developing nicely.

A couple of the new Western devotees I mentioned in my last report have actually joined and are here in Dallas. Bhakta Bill has his PhD in biopsychology and was research scientist for Baylor Medical School. He came to India and spent more than a month with me in Govardhana. Now his life is dedicated to spreading Krsna consciousness. Another new devotee I met in Houston has settled down in Dallas and is the understudy of Mother Jayanti, who has been the headmistress of the gurukula here for many years. There have been no incidents or problems in this Gurukula since she took over, and Bhaktin Sarah and she get along well. Sarah is completing her education while she helps with the school. She came with a boyfriend who went to New York and spent time with Yajna Purusa. Now they have married and are settled in Dallas. An older devotee, Jivananda Prabhu, our godbrother, has come back to full-time devotional service here in Dallas. He will be traveling back to Hungary and India with me and then returning to Dallas to help set up the men's ashrama.

Also, three young people joined the other day here in Dallas after getting a book in El Paso in a discarded-books library bin. They read the book together for a year and then decided to come find out more. They joined immediately, and the two boys are shaved up already. I had a long talk with them, and they are very nice kids, clean. Their parents know they're here, and so on. I believe this highlights the fact that things are just the same as always, despite the degradation of America since we joined. So the revival of the spiritual programs Srila Prabhupada gave us is essential, I think, to the North American yatra. Many older devotees think that times have changed and now we can no longer do things as we did before. But I'm finding that many people are even more receptive than we were, so why can't they join like we did? But the Indianization of the temples, the loss of faith in authority in general, and the resultant tendency for the older devotees to be disgruntled and "move on" to self-improvement systems, and so on, is very strong in our temples in NA now. So this is a major project for me this next year. To make Dallas a model that proves the points I just made and hopefully in the future spread this revival to other temples in NA. Without the model, it will be seen as just another theory.

Vaisesika is coming in mid Feb and will reestablish a full-time book distribution party here, and together we will try to develop things here.

In Houston work is going on to complete the major temple complex, which will include a restaurant and professional-grade gift shop. The problem is that the young Westerners I made devotees there and tried to encourage to stay and become the nucleus of a Western community thrust couldn't stay there because there was no facility for them to join as full-time devotees.

That's about it.

Krishna Das Swami

Period : January 05 - December 05

Places Visited: UK, Bharat, Mauritius, South Africa, Botswana, Hungary

REPORT: I visited all the above countries, as in previous years.

I was at our Krishna-Balaram Mandir for Gaura-Purnima, where I sponsored all the dresses for our Deities on the altar. I performed the abhishek ceremony and was pleased with the warm welcome all the devotees gave me there.

Once again I was inspired by my visit to the Hungarian yatra. Sivarama Swami asked me to speak to the devotees there at the farm about stable marriages. I did this in my usual traditional way, as I have been trained up in the Vedic culture. I was moved by the love shown by the devotees, who listened to me for five days. I hope, if my health will allow, I can revisit Hungary.

My stay in UK preaching-wise was better than before. I visited the Manor twice, including Janmashtami day. I also spoke about my initial years at the Manor, and this I spoke in Srila Prabhupada's room. I was pleased that it had a positive effect on the devotees there, who hadn't seen me at the Manor in the recent years.

I initiated 13 new disciples in the UK and performed 1 second initiation. I was pleased with the progress Coventry devotees are making. I also initiated devotees in Mauritius, South Africa, and Botswana.

As in previous years, I did Bhagavad-Gita Maha-Yajnas and attended the opening of the Phoenix temple in South Africa, where I was a guest speaker, alongside Puri Maharaj, Dinabandhu Prabhu, and Hari Sauri Prabhu. The function was hosted by Bhakti-Chaitanya Maharaj.

MY HEALTH :

My health is progressively worsening, and the periods of tiredness are increasing. One of my knees is giving me greater pain, which is hindering my mobility. I have had a steroid injection to alleviate this, but its effect wears off after only a few months. I don't want too many of these injections; therefore I have to tolerate the pain. However, this has further affected my traveling and preaching.

I thank Lord Krishna that I am able to do what I'm doing, and I pray to the Lord that this continues to please Srila Prabhupada. Due to my failing health, my disciples accompany me overseas and on all other journeys, long or short, thus incurring extra expense.

Nava Yogendra Swami

ISKCON UDHAMPUR TEMPLE OPENING.

The hard efforts of His Holiness Nava Yogendra Swami fructified on the 19th of August 2005 with the opening of a magnificent Sri Sri Gaur Radha Krishna Temple at Udhampur, commemorating the 109th birth anniversary of Srila Prabhupada. The governor of Jammu and Kashmir presided as the chief guest of the inauguration ceremony. With its unique architecture and extraordinary design, the temple stands as the glory of Kashmir. In spite of insurgency and terrorism, His Holiness continued to preach in Jammu and Kashmir undauntedly, putting much effort from his side for the completion of this project within 8 years. The temple complex has a guesthouse, Goshala, community hall, and, above all, beautiful Deities of Gauranga Mahaprabhu, Radha Krishna, Narasimhadeva, Prahlad Maharaj, and Ramdarbar. Being a source of spiritual inspiration for the whole of Jammu and Kashmir, the temple is attracting even the Muslim community. Right from the conception up till completion, it was only due to His Holiness's expert planning that the place got transformed into such a wonderful ISKCON centre.

PREACHING TO MILITARY PERSONS AT INDO PAK BORDER

In Amritsar Maharaj visited Wagha (Indo Pak Border) four times and regularly preached to the military personnel there. With his effort, some of them have included Hare Krishna chanting in their strict schedule. Maharaja also distributed prasadam on the border.

RATHAYATRA AT ISKCON AMRITSAR AND PREACHING AMONG THE SIKHS

Under the able guidance of Maharaja, ISKCON devotees in Amritsar organized and celebrated Jagannath Ratha-yatra for the second time. Around two to three lakh people attended the Ratha-yatra. There was massive prasadam distribution throughout the yatra. The unique feature of the yatra was that many Sikhs also joined in the celebration. Some forty-odd Sikhs came over from the nearby village of Chinjhoti. Maharaja visits and preaches in this place regularly, and lots of Sikhs are getting inspired to take up Krishna consciousness. In the future there is a possibility that they might open nama-hatta centers at their places.

PREACHING TO EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS IN INDIA AND PAKISTAN

While Maharaja was in Los Angeles carrying the message of Srila Prabhupada by spreading Krishna consciousness, or the universal principles of God realization, he was informed about the devastating earthquake on 8th October 2005, which took the lives of thousands in India and Pakistan. While preparing to leave for India, His Holiness informed his disciples in various parts of India to pull the right information from various authentic resources and start collecting relief materials to ensure that the most needy in India and Pakistan would be helped quickly. The information about the emergency was gathered from soldiers working in the affected area, local government officials, and newscasts by CNN and BBC.

The Iskcon Relief Yatra started on the 17th of October from Udhampur to Wri. Maharaj went to Kamal, Rot, Bandi, and other devastated cities. He distributed two truckloads of blankets, mineral water, bread, rice, and many other necessities to the earthquake-affected Muslim people.

Maharaja continued this relief work for four days. People were extremely happy with the way the ISKCON Relief operation took place.

Prabhavisnu Swami

I spent most of 2005 visiting temples in my GBC zone, which comprises about 70 centers, most of which I visited at least once, and two or three times for many bigger ones. In addition, I visited many other temples in the CIS, where I have disciples, plus some centers in other countries. ISKCON's activities are going on steadily in almost all these places, and managerial crises or serious conflicts among devotees have been rare. Thus I have been able to concentrate mainly on leading kirtans, giving lectures, giving personal advice to devotees, and having discussions with the managers in various temples. I feel peaceful doing this kind of activity, and am glad not be involved too much in conflicts among devotees, as this creates stress. Inevitably, there are problems in a few places, but if I need to spend just a small percentage of my time dealing with problems, I can cope. I participated in big festivals in Mayapur, Ukraine, South Russia, West Siberia, and Australia (New Govardhan and Otford near Sydney). In many ways these festivals are the highlights of the year for me, since it is great honor and pleasure to get the association of so many wonderful devotees, including godbrothers. I relished chanting Hare Krsna wherever I went.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prahladananda Swami

In 2005 I continued to travel to the same temples I have visited in previous years. The main places I travel to once or twice a year are: Europe, the USA, Peru, Russia, Australia/New Zealand, Hong Kong, and India.

Besides giving classes and counseling devotees, I have also given seminars on astrology, yoga, and Ayurveda in various temples around the world. Especially in Europe (Russia, Poland, Belgium) I taught yoga, and also in the USA, Australia, and Peru. In addition, in many countries I distribute Srila Prabhupada's books in airports, on the streets, and at shopping centers. This year I did the Srila Prabhupada marathon in the airport in Los Angeles.

Besides my regular correspondence, I published the 11th Health and Welfare Ministry magazine -- "Hope This Meets You in Good Health" -- and wrote an article for the Deity Worship Ministry's magazine.

I plan to increase the seminars I give this year on yoga, Ayurveda, and astrology and more or less do the same service as I did last year in terms of traveling and preaching.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rasananda Swami

I started 2005 with an "Introduction to Vaishnavism" course (Bhakta Program) at the New Gokula farm, where we graduated five newcomers to Krsna consciousness. From March on we moved to Pindamonhanga town, on the outskirts of New Gokula. At the request of many residents in the town, we moved there to cultivate the big local congregation. I gave Bhagavad-gita courses and many other courses. Periodically I would travel to some nama-hatta program that I am cultivating. From November on I started a Brazilian tour, visiting several places. Please visit our webpage to see the tour pictures. http://www.goldenavatara.com.br. My preaching plan for 2006 is to tour temples in Brazil and preach.

Sacinandana Swami

Accomplishments for 2005

It is very difficult for me to say that I have accomplished something. It is more correct for me to say that by Srila Prabhupada's mercy I was used as an instrument. These were my services:

Many, many festivals in many continents, sometimes overlapping. We were instrumental in building up Goloka Dhama and making it financially and manpower-wise stable. (We pray that this will remain so.)

Many, many preaching programs in Germany and Croatia.

One new nama-hatta center in Germany.

Helping to develop the fantastic preaching of the Veda Academy. By Krsna's mercy several people became attracted to Krsna consciousness.

Future

I can see that our preaching doesn't attract as many devotees to active service in Srila Prabhupada's movement as it did in the past. I feel we must look for newer ways to reach a larger audience (see Srila Prabhupada's strategic planning effort in America). I personally wish to work more with the Veda Academy, which has achieved good successes in a) caring for the devotees by giving them a stable future, b) reaching out to many new people. Of course, I wish to preach about the things sannyasis preach about — pure Krsna consciousness. Simultaneously I will continue to look after some German projects, especially Goloka Dhama. I will also visit the countries we are helping to develop, namely Croatia, Bosnia, ad Serbia, and also some other newly developing preaching projects in Muslim countries.

Satsvarupa dasa Goswami

In 2005 I still suffered from post-traumatic stress anxiety disorder. It is also known as anticipatory anxiety leading to migraines, but now my health is much improved, with a lower frequency of migraines and a lower frequency of having to take preventative medicine and painkillers. However, I am still too frail to travel and meet with many people, either in happy association or confrontational meetings.

But during the year I ventured out of my safety zone as an experiment and traveled and preached. In April I went from Northern California, where I live in health-care status, to Washington, D.C. There I met with some devotees for talks and then visited Bhakti-tirtha Maharaja. I became close with BTM in his final months and exchanged phone calls with him weekly. After my visit with him in April, I  traveled to upstate New York, where some devotees live in an area called Stuyvesant Falls. I stayed with them for several week and gave some talks. Then I traveled to Houston, where  I was invited to take part in a very big festival held in the city. ISKCON was invited to take part in this festival, which 150,000 people attended and which is held every year in the city’s parks. Every year the festival has a different theme. This year the theme was India. I took part as a reading author. (Kalakantha Prabhu also came and read.) I read on two different occasions, and hundreds of people heard me, and I distributed many books and signed many books also and talked to hundreds of people individually. I also gave lectures in the temple.

I managed to do everything I planned on the tour, but when I returned to Northern California I had a relapse of bad health. For several weeks I had increases in headaches and suffered from fatigue. It really proved to me that I was not ready for so much traveling and preaching. My realization is that there is more than one way to serve Srila Prabhupada, even for a sannyasi.

I have continued writing and just published a book, "Sanatorium," a novel. I have about five other books finished that we would like to publish.

I continue to exchange letters with my disciples and godbrothers and -sisters.

I regularly read Srila Prabhupada's books and other Vaisnava books (I am currently reading Sarartha-darsini, the Tenth Canto commentaries of Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura). I am always concerned about my japa and trying to improve it. The basics of chanting and hearing will be my priority for the next year also.

During the year I did have visitors. I associated with Jayadvaita Swami, Giriraja Swami, Hridaya Caitanya Prabhu, Yadunandana Dasa, Suresvara Prabhu, Tripurari Maharaja, Siddhanta Prabhu, and some of my disciples from Guyana and other places.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vedavyasapriya Swami

The year 2005 saw me engage in some very hectic preaching, since I was relieved from administrative services. For the first four months of the year I traveled extensively in Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi (twice) and took off for Nepal for a few days’ preaching. I initiated seven candidates from my previous administrative zone. In the month of May, with a godbrother from New York I took to the Himalayas for a dhama-yatra. Then in the month of June I purchased a round-the-world-ticket and traveled to the UK, the USA, Canada, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea, back to Australia, and finally to India on November 1st for Kartik. I initiated two students in the USA, nineteen in Fiji, two in Australia, and two in India. Besides this, for the last six years I have been participating in MIHE and VIHE by both giving courses and taking them.

In 2006 I am planning to spend six months in India preaching and six months in the abovementioned countries.
