This green-stemmed silverbeet is called Perpetual Spinach. It does not have a thick midrib like other chards, and has tender clumping leaves with a mild flavour. It looks and tastes like spinach but, because it’s a true silverbeet (chard), has a much tougher constitution.
Apparently it is far less likely to run to seed than spinach, which makes it a good choice for growing through summer and into autumn. Mine has been leafing for over a year. Guess this is why the ‘perpetual’ appears in its name. Like many long-producing plants, it will crop more prolifically if the leaves are picked regularly. Better go pick some right now.
