Thinai

sprays of millet:

The following information was entered:

R.Gowri Venkatesh from Coimbatore, India, writes:

"What is the English name for cereal Thinai and what is the use of Thinai and how we can use that in the food products like making dosas etc.

My reply:

The English name for Thinai is Millet. Thus Thinai Maavu is Millet Flour.

In my research I have seen mention of two millets, Foxtail Millet and Finger Millet. I am not sure if they are the same, different but interchangeable, or whether they have totally different uses. I'll have to do more homework.

Sorry, but I don't have any millet dosa recipes, but I am sure there would be plenty in your regions. Millet grain and millet flour are extensively used in breads and savoury grain dishes in many places in India and overseas.

I suggest you search the internet for recipes. Or maybe a helpful reader of this exchange can offer a recipe.
