Irving the Jewish Dog

Morty visits Dr. Saul, the veterinarian, and says, "My dog has a problem."

Dr. Saul says, "So tell me about the dog and the problem."

"It's a Jewish dog. His name is Irving and he can talk," says Morty.

"He can talk?" the doubting doctor asks.

"Watch this!" Morty points to the dog and commands: "Irving, Fetch!"

Irving, the dog, begins to walk toward the door, then turns around and says,

"So why are you talking to me like that? You always order me around like I'm nothing. And you only call me when you want something. And then you make me sleep on the floor, with my arthritis. You give me this fahkahkta food with all the salt and fat, and you tell me it's a special diet. It tastes like dreck! YOU should eat it yourself! And do you ever take me for a decent walk? NO, it's out of the house, a short pish, and right back home. Maybe if I could stretch out a little, the sciatica wouldn't kill me so much! I should roll over and play dead for real for all you care!"

Dr. Saul is amazed, "This is remarkable! What could be the problem?"

Morty says, "He has a hearing problem! I said 'Fetch', not 'Kvetch'".

Kurma says: "Can't figure out this joke? No Jewish friends to ask? Alright, alright, go to:

Céad Míle Fáilte (One Hundred Thousand Welcomes)

Sitting in my apartment, relaxing and writing this diary entry. The only sounds are the thud thud thud of the washing machine and the gentle rain that is finally falling on the rich, dry soil of County Dublin.

I am all alone since Ananda Hari, the owner of the place, left two days ago for the famous Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts in the UK. He drove his enormous mobile home to the massive ferry that took him across the Irish Sea and landed him in Wales. Each year the Hare Krishnas go to the festival and cook enough free food to serve to over 100,000 attendees. A truly awesome and loving labour of love that earns a great deal of respect from all.

After lunch today I will be picked up and driven two hours to the famous Inishrath Island in Northern Ireland for a weekend cooking retreat. Here's a winter snapshot of the place. Warmer today, I'm sure!

winter:

I'm scheduled to give the keynote address tonight, followed by two days of culinary fun and games. In the meantime, why don't you have a browse of a webpage describing the Island:

I'll keep you posted, of course. Bye for now.

A Day in the Kitchen

So what else is new (?) you may ask. In one sense, not much different from the day before, yet each day brings with it new joys, new challenges and new realisations. I spent Thursday at the original Govinda's in Aungier street, assisted in cooking the lunch, and introduced 3 new recipes to their menu.

Wee Dublin Lunch:

I started with a hearty fresh potato soup flavoured with dill and celery seeds, and enriched with fresh cream.

Then came my famous vegetarian Moussaka - an absolute delight! Layers of grilled eggplant sandwiched between herbed and tomato-enriched meaty brown lentils, and topped with a cheesy white sauce.

This was topped off with a Malaysian-style vegetables in a spicy/curry leaf/coriander/coconut cream sauce.

It was providential that, while the day before's scorching hot temperatures enticed less customers to the restaurant, yesterday the weather had cooled and the crowds were brisk.

lunch is cookin':

Took the opportunity to meander from table to table, chatting and asking how everyone enjoyed their lunch. A big thumbs up, it seems.

I wandered to the train station, exhausted but blissful, past the bizarre Spike that adorns the main shopping street.

The Spike:

I was so tired that I fell asleep on the floor of my apartment and woke up 5 hours later. Perhaps the remnants of jet lag finally unravelling. Let the adventures continue!
