Sankirtana
Yesterday's harinama at the St Kilda Festival was a total success!
Around 15 devotees started singing from the usual spot, corner of Park and Fitzroy streets, and danced their way right through the heart of the festival. As the momentum was building up, more and more onlookers responded and joined the party. Some enthusiastic teenagers even stayed with the sankirtan party till the end and didn't want it to end. So much so that the harinama went for one hour longer than planned. Kanapathy Prabhu got so much taste out of that morning outing that he arranged an evening harinama that ended up being even more successful. Almost twice as much devotees assembled and this time hundreds of people joined in from the festival. This really goes to show that harinama sankirtan is indeed the 'yuga-dharma' or recommended practice for this age of Kali. Harinama Sankirtan Yajna ki, jaya!
It's Thursday! It marks our weekly Summer Harinama in St Kilda! Those eager for the opportunity to preach and please Sri Sri Gaura Nitai are invited to join us at 6.30pm at the corner of Fitzroy and Park Streets. From there the Harinama party will cruise along the esplanade, down the beach and around the Luna Park precinct. The most prominent stop on our spiritual itinerary is the St Kilda Market where we usually meet with an extremely receptive crowd that happily sings and dances with the Sankirtan Party. If time allows, Acland Street will be our last landmark. Tonight's Summer Harinama will be dedicated to Jayapataka Swami for his speedy recovery. The weather is most favourable to spread the mercy readily available in Kali Yuga to all those who will be out, looking for ... Krishna... ultimately! Dayananda Das is organising a 2-day harinama marathon headed by Janananda Goswami.
The first outing is on the 30th December; the harinama party meets on Chapel Street (outside Windsor Train Station) and will chant from 11am till 1.30pm. All participants are invited for lunch at 2pm at Surya Gopal Prabhu's Residence. The harinama then continues from 3 to 4pm in Springvale (outside the Springvale Train Station). The final round for the day will be from 4 to 5pm in Dandenong, near Clow Street and Princess Highway ( Good Guys Store). On the 31st December, harinama starts in front the Centro Mall in Boxhill (Cnr of Bruce St & Whitehorse St) and goes from 12 to 1.30pm. All participants are again invited for lunch at 2pm. The harinama goes from 3 to 4pm in Glenferrie this time. Devotees will meet at the corner of Glenferrie Road and Burwood Road (outside Glenferrie train station). The harinama party will proceed to Richmond; the meeting point is the corner of Church Road and Bridge Road (outside the Fitzroy Townhall) and devotees will chant from 4 to 5pm. They will conclude the day on Swanston Walk, in the city (outside Gopal's Restaurant) from 6.30 to 7pm. You are all invited to join them and celebrate Lord Chaitanya Sankirtan Movement. Come in crowds! For more information, please contact Dayananda Prabhu on 0415 043 024.
Krishna Fest, our urban preaching program run mainly by Vraja Nari and Svarupa Sakti and their dedicated crew is held on the 3rd floor of the famous Crossways Restaurant on 123 Swanston Walk. Krishna Fest attracts spiritual seekers from the Melbourne CBD and beyond. The program starts with a 30-minute kirtan, and depending on the speaker for the night is followed by a general introduction on the Bhagavat Gita or a deeper understanding of Krishna Consciousness. Another 30-minute kirtan leads into the most relishable part of the evening for many, prasadam time.
Krishna Fest concludes with a sumptuous spiritualised banquet which gives the guests and their hosts an opportunity to socialise and make friends. Aniruddha Prabhu, our Temple President, has been our speaker for the past two weeks. He gave a funny, entertaining and yet pertinent talk about the influence of the three modes of material nature in one's daily life . Krishna Fest is held every Wednesday and Saturday at 6pm. The entry fee is $5 only and includes the vegetatian feast. Check out the slideshow.
Melbourne Mahaprabhu Mandir hosts many school programmes throughout the year. Svarupa Sakti devi dasi is always there to greet the teachers and students on their arrival and guides them through the temple She then gives her young audience a general explanation of the different aspects of the temple room, with the main focus being the Deities and the maha mantra. Once, they are seated Svarupa Sakti explains the philosophy of Krishna Consciousness which is followed by a question and answer session. The group then queues at 1pm for prasadam after which they settle into the theatre for a 22-minute slideshow on the history of the Melbourne Temple. The visit is concluded with a short kirtan as a demonstration of the principal musical instruments that are used in chanting the holy names of the Lord. Here's a slideshow.
Some good advice on distributing Krsna consciousness in everyday life... Distributing books on the street, or door to door, are more or less forthright preaching activities, which work on a ‘take it or leave it' basis. People understand our motives and their choice to accept or reject, lasts as long as the encounter. In the workplace, or similar setting, this is not always possible. Other forms of preaching are required, which may not produce immediate results, but will pay handsome spiritual dividends later on. Patience is required for this. I'm looking forward to our Friday night hari-nama's after seeing this report from Tri-yuga Prabhu. There are some great pictures... We assembled at 6:30pm outside Crossways, replete with our freshly modified wireless headset mic and amp. Sita Pati played the accordion and led, Vijaya played Mrdanga, Vrajadhama played the djembe, and Adam, Uddhava and several other devotees provided a steady, high energy kartala precussion. The combined sound was tumultuous! Everyone was nicely dressed and the ladies danced in time. |
