Vedic literature states that in this modern age, the most effective process of self-purification and enlightenment is by the chanting of the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra:

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna

Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

Hare Rama Hare Rama

Rama Rama Hare Hare

Translation: "O energy of the Lord [Hare], O all-attractive Lord [Krishna], O Supreme Enjoyer [Rama], please engage me in Your service."

The Maha Mantra is a spiritual sound vibration; by chanting and hearing it carefully one cleanses the mind and heart of all impurities. Thus one can make spiritual advancement and experience ever-increasing bliss.

Devotees who accept formal initiation into the chanting of the Holy Name vow to chant a prescribed number of mantras each day. They also vow to abstain from meat eating, intoxication, illicit sex and gambling. These aforementioned activities are stated by Vedic literature to disrupt physical, mental and spiritual well-being and also to increase anxiety and conflict within society.
